When comparing CCTV cameras, one of the first specifications you will see is resolution. 3MP and 5MP cameras are both common options, but the higher number is not automatically the right choice for every installation.
The useful question is: how much image detail do you need at the location where the camera will be installed?
What does 3MP or 5MP mean?
MP means megapixels. In simple terms, a higher megapixel count provides a higher-resolution image and can capture more image detail when the camera, lens, lighting and installation are suitable.
A 5MP camera generally provides more image detail than a 3MP camera. However, resolution is only one part of the overall surveillance result.
3MP vs 5MP at a glance
- 3MP: suitable for many general monitoring applications where the available image detail meets the property's needs.
- 5MP: provides higher image resolution and can be useful where additional image detail is important.
- Both: require suitable placement, lighting, lens selection, recording equipment and storage planning.
Does 5MP always give a better result?
Not necessarily. A higher-resolution camera cannot compensate for poor positioning, an unsuitable viewing angle or difficult lighting conditions. For example, a camera installed too far from the area of interest may still fail to provide the detail you need.
Before choosing between 3MP and 5MP, consider the distance to the subject, the area you need to cover, the expected lighting conditions and what you actually need to identify in the recorded video.
When can 3MP be enough?
3MP can be appropriate for general surveillance where the camera is positioned at a suitable distance and the required level of detail is moderate. It may be a practical choice when the installation does not require the additional resolution of a higher-resolution camera.
For example, a camera covering a general indoor area may not need the same resolution as a camera intended to monitor a larger entrance or another location where more image detail is important.
When should you consider 5MP?
5MP can be useful when you want more image detail from the camera and the installation can take advantage of the additional resolution.
It is particularly important to consider the intended viewing distance and field of view. A higher-resolution camera can be useful when you need greater detail, but the lens and camera position still need to match the area being monitored.
Resolution and night vision
Resolution should not be considered separately from lighting. A camera that performs well during the day may produce different results in low-light conditions.
When comparing cameras, check the manufacturer's specifications for night vision and low-light performance rather than assuming that a higher megapixel count automatically means better night-time images.
Resolution and storage
Higher-resolution video can affect storage requirements. Your actual storage needs depend on several factors, including the number of cameras, recording resolution, frame rate, compression settings, recording schedule and how long you want to retain footage.
Make sure the recorder and storage capacity are suitable for the cameras you plan to install. Network camera systems commonly use an NVR, while compatible wired CCTV systems may use an XVR or DVR-type recorder.

What about the lens?
Megapixels are only part of the camera specification. The lens and field of view affect how the available resolution is used across the scene.
A wide field of view can cover a larger area, while a different lens configuration may be more suitable when the priority is a narrower area at a greater distance. Choose the camera based on the actual scene rather than resolution alone.
3MP or 5MP: what should you choose?
Start with the surveillance requirement rather than the megapixel number.
- Choose 3MP when the required level of detail is adequately covered by that resolution and the installation conditions are suitable.
- Consider 5MP when you need additional image detail and the camera position, lens, lighting and recording system can make use of it.
- For either option, confirm compatibility with the recorder, network, storage and other equipment before installation.
Final checklist
- Measure the viewing distance.
- Identify the area that needs coverage.
- Consider the field of view and lens.
- Check day and night lighting conditions.
- Plan recording and storage requirements.
- Confirm recorder and network compatibility.
- Choose the resolution based on the actual surveillance requirement.
