CCTV storage requirements depend on more than the number of cameras. Resolution, recording schedule, frame rate, compression, camera count and the amount of time you want to keep recordings all affect the storage you need.
What determines CCTV storage requirements?
- Number of cameras
- Recording resolution
- Frame rate
- Compression settings
- Continuous or event-based recording
- Required retention period
Why camera count matters
More cameras generally produce more recorded video. A system with four cameras has different storage requirements from one with sixteen cameras, even when the cameras use similar settings.
Why resolution matters
Higher-resolution video can require more storage than lower-resolution video when other recording settings are comparable. This is one reason to plan storage together with the cameras and recorder rather than choosing a hard drive separately.
Continuous recording vs event recording
A system that records continuously can generate substantially more footage than one configured to record only when specified events occur. The appropriate recording approach depends on the surveillance requirement and the capabilities of the equipment.
How long should footage be kept?
Retention is a business and security requirement rather than a single universal number. Decide how many days of recordings you actually need, then size the storage around that requirement.
NVR and XVR storage
NVRs are commonly used with IP cameras, while XVRs are commonly used with compatible wired CCTV systems. Both can support internal storage depending on the recorder model. Always check the manufacturer's specifications for supported storage capacity and drive requirements.

Simple planning example
Imagine a business has several cameras and wants to retain recordings for a defined number of days. Start with the camera count, recording resolution and recording schedule, then check the recorder manufacturer's storage guidance for the intended configuration. The final requirement should be confirmed against the exact camera and recorder specifications.
Storage checklist
- Count the cameras.
- Check each camera's recording resolution.
- Decide whether recording is continuous or event-based.
- Determine the required retention period.
- Check recorder storage compatibility.
- Allow for future expansion if required.
