CAT6 Cable for CCTV and Networking: A Practical Guide

CAT6 Ethernet cable is commonly used in network installations and can be suitable for compatible IP CCTV systems. Choosing the cable is only one part of the installation: the camera, switch, recorder, connectors and network layout also need to be planned together.

What is CAT6 cable?

CAT6 is a category of twisted-pair Ethernet cabling designed for network data transmission. It is commonly used for computer networks and can also be used in compatible IP camera installations.

Can CAT6 be used for IP CCTV?

Yes, compatible IP cameras can use Ethernet cabling such as CAT6 for network connectivity. Where the camera supports PoE, compatible Ethernet cabling can also carry power from suitable PoE equipment.

See our PoE switch guide for more information about PoE planning.

CAT6 for CCTV vs traditional CCTV cable

IP camera systems commonly use network cabling, while traditional wired CCTV systems commonly use dedicated video cabling to compatible XVR/DVR equipment. The appropriate cable therefore depends on the camera and recorder architecture.

Planning CAT6 cable runs

Plan the cable route before installation. Consider the distance between cameras and networking equipment, physical protection, cable routing and the location of the NVR or other network equipment.

CAT6 and PoE

When using PoE cameras, confirm that the camera and PoE switch or injector support compatible standards and power requirements. Also check the total PoE budget of the network equipment when multiple cameras are connected.

What else do you need?

An IP CCTV installation may also require compatible RJ45 connectors, patch leads, switches or PoE equipment, an NVR and suitable storage. The exact requirements depend on the installation.

Installation checklist

  • Confirm the camera uses Ethernet networking.
  • Plan cable routes and distances.
  • Check PoE compatibility where applicable.
  • Choose compatible networking equipment.
  • Plan the NVR and storage.
  • Use suitable connectors and installation practices.
  • Test network connectivity after installation.

CAT6 should be selected as part of the complete network design rather than in isolation. Confirm the exact requirements of the cameras and networking equipment before installation.
