Power over Ethernet, commonly called PoE, can simplify installations that use compatible IP cameras by carrying network data and electrical power over suitable Ethernet cabling.
What is a PoE switch?
A PoE switch is a network switch with ports designed to provide power to compatible PoE devices while also carrying network traffic. In a CCTV installation, compatible IP cameras can connect to the switch using Ethernet cabling.
Why use PoE for CCTV?
PoE can reduce the need for separate power cabling at each compatible camera location. This can make installation planning simpler, particularly when multiple IP cameras are being installed.
How does a PoE CCTV setup work?
A typical setup can include IP cameras connected to a PoE switch, with the switch connected to the rest of the network and an NVR where required. The exact arrangement depends on the camera, switch and recorder specifications.

Check PoE compatibility
Not every camera or switch uses the same power requirements. Check the manufacturer's specifications for the camera's PoE standard and power requirement, and make sure the switch provides compatible power.
Consider total PoE power budget
When several cameras are connected, the switch's total available PoE power matters. Add the expected power requirements of the connected devices and compare the total with the switch's specified PoE budget.
Plan cable runs
Ethernet cable routes should be planned before installation. Cable length, installation environment and cable quality can affect network performance and power delivery. Follow the specifications of the equipment and cabling being used.
PoE switch vs separate power
A PoE switch can simplify an IP camera installation when the cameras are compatible with PoE. A separate power arrangement may still be appropriate for equipment that does not support PoE or where the installation has different power requirements.
PoE and NVRs
PoE networking and NVR recording solve different parts of the system. The PoE switch can provide network connectivity and power to compatible cameras, while the NVR can record the camera streams. Some NVR models also have integrated PoE ports, so check the exact recorder specification before adding a separate switch.
PoE installation checklist
- Confirm the cameras support PoE.
- Check the required PoE standard and power.
- Check the switch's total PoE budget.
- Plan Ethernet cable routes.
- Confirm network and recorder compatibility.
- Consider future camera expansion.
