How to Choose CCTV Cameras for a Shop

Choosing CCTV for a shop starts with identifying the areas where security and visibility matter most. Entrances, sales counters, aisles, stock rooms and back doors can have different surveillance requirements.

Start with the shop layout

Mark the main entrance, checkout or sales counter, customer areas, storage areas and other access points. Decide what each camera needs to monitor before choosing individual models.

Cover entrances and access points

Entrances can require clear views of people entering and leaving. Consider the camera position, viewing angle, lighting and distance from the doorway.

Monitor the counter

A counter camera should be positioned so the intended area is visible without unnecessary obstructions. Lighting and camera angle can affect the usefulness of the recorded image.

Consider stock and storage areas

Stock rooms and storage areas may need cameras positioned to monitor access points rather than every shelf. The correct number of cameras depends on the size and layout of the area.

Choose the right camera type

Depending on the shop and installation, IP, wired CCTV or Wi-Fi cameras may be appropriate. Read our IP vs Analog guide and CCTV buying guide.

Think about resolution and lighting

Resolution should be selected according to viewing distance and the detail required. Night-time lighting, bright entrances and reflective surfaces should also be considered.

See our 3MP vs 5MP guide.

Plan recording and storage

Choose an appropriate NVR or XVR depending on the camera system, then plan storage around the number of cameras, resolution, recording schedule and required retention period.

Plan networking and cabling

IP cameras require suitable network connectivity. If PoE cameras are being used, check the switch or recorder's PoE capabilities. Traditional CCTV installations require compatible cabling and recording equipment.
