A successful CCTV installation starts with planning. Before buying cameras, identify the areas that need monitoring and plan camera placement, cabling, power, recording and storage as one complete system.
1. Identify the areas to monitor
List entrances, counters, corridors, parking areas, storage rooms, gates and other locations that require coverage. Consider what you need to see in each area and the distance between the camera and the subject.
2. Choose camera positions carefully
Camera position affects the final result. Avoid placing a camera where walls, signs or other objects block the intended view. Consider height, viewing angle, lighting and the distance to the area of interest.
3. Choose the camera type
Depending on the installation, you may use IP cameras, traditional wired CCTV cameras or Wi-Fi cameras. IP systems commonly use an NVR, while compatible wired CCTV systems commonly use an XVR or DVR-type recorder.
Read our IP Camera vs Analog Camera guide before deciding.
4. Plan cabling
For wired installations, plan cable routes before mounting equipment. Keep cable runs practical and protect cabling from unnecessary physical damage or environmental exposure.
For IP systems, consider network cable routes and the location of switches or PoE equipment. For traditional CCTV systems, plan the dedicated video and power connections required by the equipment.
5. Plan power
Every camera needs an appropriate power arrangement. Depending on the system, power may be supplied separately or through compatible PoE equipment. Confirm the requirements of the exact camera and networking equipment before installation.
6. Plan the recorder and storage
Choose the recorder based on camera type, number of cameras, compatibility and expected expansion. Then plan storage around camera resolution, recording schedule and required retention.
See our NVR vs XVR guide and CCTV storage guide.
7. Check network coverage
IP and Wi-Fi systems require appropriate network planning. Check network coverage at camera locations, especially for Wi-Fi cameras. For larger installations, consider network capacity and switch placement.
8. Consider lighting
Check both daytime and night-time conditions. Direct light, glare, headlights and very dark areas can affect the recorded image. Choose the camera and position based on the actual environment.
9. Check compatibility
Do not assume that cameras, recorders, storage devices and networking equipment are automatically compatible. Check the manufacturer's specifications for the exact products before installation.
10. Test before finalizing
After installation, check camera views, focus, recording, remote viewing where applicable, network connectivity and storage operation. Testing before final completion can reveal positioning or connectivity issues while they are still easy to correct.
