Complete CCTV System Guide: Cameras, Recorder, Storage and Networking

A CCTV system is more than a camera. A complete installation may include cameras, a recorder, storage, cabling, power equipment, networking equipment and mounting accessories. Planning these components together helps avoid compatibility problems.

1. Cameras

The camera is selected according to the area being monitored, viewing distance, lighting, resolution and installation environment. Depending on the system, you may use IP, traditional wired or Wi-Fi cameras.

2. Recorder

IP cameras are commonly paired with an NVR, while compatible wired CCTV cameras are commonly paired with an XVR or DVR-type recorder. Check the exact recorder specifications before purchase.

3. Storage

Storage requirements depend on camera count, resolution, recording schedule, frame rate, compression and retention period. Plan storage after defining how the system will record.

Read our CCTV storage guide.

4. Cabling

IP systems commonly use Ethernet/network cabling, while traditional CCTV systems commonly use dedicated video cabling. Plan cable routes and installation conditions before equipment is mounted.

For IP systems, see our CAT6 guide.

5. Power

Every camera needs appropriate power. Depending on the equipment, power can be provided separately or through compatible PoE equipment. Check the manufacturer's requirements.

6. Networking

IP and Wi-Fi systems require appropriate network planning. IP installations may use switches and PoE, while Wi-Fi installations depend on suitable wireless coverage.

See our PoE switch guide.

7. Placement and lighting

Even a high-resolution camera can produce poor results if it is badly positioned. Consider viewing distance, field of view, lighting, reflections and obstructions.

8. Compatibility

Check that cameras, recorders, storage, switches, power equipment and cabling are compatible. Do not select components independently without checking the complete system.

9. Future expansion

If the system may grow, consider recorder channel capacity, network equipment and available cable routes when planning the initial installation.
